Return after burnout: 12 key questions before resuming work
Christian Chevalier ·
A return after burnout needs preparing. These questions help HR, the manager and the person avoid the most common traps: confusing resumption with recovery, recreating the conditions that led to exhaustion, or leaving the manager alone with the situation.
They follow the five steps of the Winning Return Method™ — Understand, Design, Mobilise, Steer, Transform — and do not replace medical advice or occupational health services.
What's inside
- — Understand — What in real work weighed before the leave? Have those conditions changed?
- — Understand — Have we listened to the person about their work, not only their health?
- — Understand — Where are the frictions between the person, the team and the organisation?
- — Design — What progression in workload and responsibilities is realistic over the first weeks?
- — Design — Which tasks can be deferred, and who takes them on without burning out in turn?
- — Design — Are the proposed adjustments consistent with each other and with medical recommendations?
- — Mobilise — Who does what between the person, the manager, HR and occupational health?
- — Mobilise — What is useful to share with the team, and what must remain confidential?
- — Steer — Which simple markers will we follow, and how often will we review?
- — Steer — Which signals should alert us to a risk of relapse?
- — Transform — What does this return reveal about how we organise work?
- — Transform — Which concrete action will prevent the next situation?
